Everything you need to know about buying, selling, and transferring IPv4 address blocks through RIPE NCC, covering Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Central Asia.

What is a RIPE NCC IPv4 Transfer?

A RIPE NCC IPv4 transfer is the process of moving IPv4 address block registration from one Local Internet Registry (LIR) to another within the RIPE NCC service region. RIPE NCC covers Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Central Asia — one of the largest and most active IPv4 transfer markets globally.

Unlike ARIN, RIPE NCC does not require recipients to demonstrate a justified need for IPv4 addresses in transfer transactions. This makes RIPE transfers generally faster and simpler, governed by the RIPE-713 transfer policy.

Step-by-Step RIPE Transfer Process

01

Verify RIPE Membership

Both the buyer and seller must be RIPE NCC members or have a sponsoring Local Internet Registry (LIR). If you're not a RIPE member, IPv4 Depot can connect you with a sponsoring LIR to facilitate the transfer.

Non-members can use a sponsoring LIR. IPv4 Depot has partnerships with LIRs across Europe.

02

Agree on Terms

Buyer and seller agree on the IPv4 address range, pricing, and transfer terms. IPv4 Depot handles all negotiations, ensuring competitive market rates and comprehensive contract terms with escrow protection.

RIPE transfers don't require pre-approval like ARIN, making the process faster.

03

Initiate Transfer in RIPE Database

The source (seller) initiates the transfer through the RIPE Database. This involves updating the inetnum objects and associated route objects. IPv4 Depot manages all technical database updates.

Accurate RIPE Database updates are critical. Errors can delay transfers significantly.

04

RIPE NCC Review

RIPE NCC reviews the transfer request to ensure compliance with their transfer policy (RIPE-713). They verify that both parties are authorized and that the address space is eligible for transfer.

RIPE NCC typically processes transfers within 5-10 business days.

05

Completion & WHOIS Update

Once approved, RIPE updates the registry to reflect the new holder. The inetnum objects are updated, and the buyer gains full control over the address space. Escrow funds are released to the seller.

After completion, update your route objects and RPKI ROAs for the new address space.

RIPE Transfer FAQ

How long does a RIPE IPv4 transfer take?

RIPE transfers typically complete in 1-3 weeks, faster than ARIN transfers because RIPE doesn't require pre-approval or need justification for transfers between existing address holders.

Do I need to be a RIPE member to receive IPv4 addresses?

You need to be a RIPE NCC member (LIR) or have a sponsoring LIR. IPv4 Depot can connect you with sponsoring LIRs across Europe if you're not already a member.

Can I transfer IPv4 addresses from RIPE to ARIN?

Yes, inter-RIR transfers between RIPE and ARIN are supported. These transfers have additional requirements and typically take longer. IPv4 Depot has extensive experience with cross-region transfers.

What is RIPE-713?

RIPE-713 is the policy document governing IPv4 address transfers within the RIPE NCC service region. It outlines the requirements and procedures for transferring IPv4 address blocks between RIPE members.

Are RIPE IPv4 addresses more expensive than ARIN?

Pricing varies based on market conditions, block size, and IP reputation. Generally, RIPE and ARIN prices are comparable, though regional demand fluctuations can create temporary differences. IPv4 Depot provides competitive pricing across all regions.
